UN Adopts Two New anti-Israel Resolutions

By prof. Steven Zipperstein

On 11 December 2024 the UN General Assembly adopted two new anti-Israel Resolutions.

The first resolution demands “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. It further demanded “immediate access by the civilian population in the Gaza Strip to basic services and humanitarian assistance indispensable to its survival, while rejecting any effort to starve Palestinians.”  It also demanded the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” but it also referenced the Security Council’s June 2024 Resolution (which the Biden Administration unfortunately chose not to veto) demanding the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian terrorists imprisoned in Israel.

The second resolution demanded Israel allow UNRWA to resume its activities “without impediment or restriction” in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem “to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe.”  The resolution expresses the General Assembly’s “deep concern” about “attempts to discredit” UNRWA, but fails to acknowledge that dozens of UNRWA employees are also Hamas terrorists, with some participating in the October 7, 2023 massacres in Israel and others using their homes to imprison Israeli hostages.

The two resolutions represent more of what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has referred to as the UN’s “flat earth society” mode of thinking.  The General Assembly’s calls for a permanent ceasefire and for full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza amount to a complete endorsement of Hamas’s demands, and would effectively reward Hamas for the October 7, 2023 invasion of Israel.

The General Assembly’s separate demand that Israel allow UNRWA to resume its activity ignores UNRWA’s complicity in Hamas’ genocidal attacks against Israel.  The Israelis have produced enormous evidence that more than one hundred UNRWA employees are also Hamas terrorists (including some operating at the command level), yet the General Assembly responded by condemning Israel for “discrediting” UNRWA.

These two UN Resolutions demonstrate once again the General Assembly’s moral bankruptcy and its cheerleading for Hamas.
